This assignment is designed to assess students’ understanding of business practices.

To secure an A+ grade, adhere to these guidelines and make sure your work aligns with the grading criteria:

Introduction (100-150 words)

This is where you set the stage for your essay. You want to capture the reader’s attention, scope the topic, and clearly state your thesis.

  1. Define the subject matter: Start by briefly explaining AI in chemical engineering, focusing on your chosen area—Oil and Gas, Drug Discovery, or Material Discovery. You could begin with a sentence like, “Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming industries worldwide, and chemical engineering is no exception.”
  2. State why it’s important: Mention why AI’s application in this field is relevant for Singapore. For instance, you could talk about Singapore’s role as a hub for innovation or its goals to be at the forefront of technology in specific industries.
  3. Thesis statement: This is crucial. Clearly state your position—whether you believe AI in your chosen field is suitable for Singapore—and briefly outline why. For example, “This essay argues that AI in drug discovery presents a promising opportunity for Singapore due to its potential to accelerate research and align with the nation’s innovation agenda.”

How to Improve: Be concise but clear. The thesis statement should outline the main argument and provide direction for your essay. It helps to think of it as a roadmap for the reader.

Body Paragraphs (450-500 words)

Here, you’ll explain and support your stance using a mix of analysis and external sources.

  1. Topic sentences: Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that clearly states the main point. For instance, “One key reason AI in drug discovery is suitable for Singapore is its ability to significantly shorten the drug development process, which aligns with the country’s focus on healthcare innovation.”
  2. Substantiate your argument: Use external sources to support your points. You’ll need at least 5 credible sources, including 2 academic journal articles. Look for statistics, studies, or expert opinions that back your claims. For example, if discussing drug discovery, you might cite a study showing how AI has reduced development times in other countries.
  3. Apply critical thinking (Paul-Elder framework): Don’t just summarize your sources—analyze them. Ask questions like:
    • What are the potential limitations or challenges of applying AI in this field in Singapore?
    • What assumptions are being made, and how do they apply to Singapore’s context?

This is where your critical thinking skills come in. Consider the pros and cons of AI implementation in your chosen area. For example, if you’re discussing AI in material discovery, reflect on the costs of adopting AI and whether Singapore’s material research industry can support it.

  4. Paraphrase and cite sources correctly: Make sure you’re paraphrasing instead of just quoting large sections. APA 7th edition citation style should be used throughout. Be sure to introduce your sources properly (e.g., According to a study by Smith et al. (2021),). This not only avoids plagiarism but also shows you’ve understood the material.

How to Improve:

  • Make sure each paragraph is focused and well-supported with evidence.
  • Don’t just list information—analyze and explain why AI is or isn’t suitable for Singapore, using your sources to support your reasoning.
  • Ensure you’re citing sources correctly with APA 7th edition.

Conclusion (100-150 words)

In this section, you’ll summarize your argument and provide a strong closing statement.

  1. Restate your thesis: Briefly summarize the key points you made in your essay and reaffirm your stance. For example, “In conclusion, AI presents a valuable opportunity for Singapore’s drug discovery sector due to its potential to drive innovation and improve research efficiency.”
  2. Implications: End with a statement about the broader implications or future potential of AI in this field. You might mention how it could enhance Singapore’s global competitiveness or how it aligns with the country’s strategic goals.

How to Improve: Keep it focused. Avoid introducing new information in the conclusion. Instead, reinforce what you’ve already discussed, and leave the reader with a clear understanding of your argument.

General Tips for Scoring Higher:

  • Clear Structure: Your essay should have a logical flow. Make sure each paragraph leads naturally to the next, and use clear transitions between ideas.
  • Stay within the word limit: Keep your essay concise—700 to 750 words is the limit. Be precise with your language and avoid unnecessary details.
  • Grammar and Clarity: Proofread carefully for grammar, sentence structure, and clarity. Marks will be deducted for unclear writing or grammatical errors, so make sure your essay is polished and easy to read.
  • Apply the Paul-Elder Framework: Demonstrate critical thinking by analyzing assumptions, considering multiple perspectives, and evaluating the implications of your arguments.
  • Accurate Referencing: Make sure all your sources are cited properly using APA style. Don’t forget to include a reference list at the end of your essay.
