Vlog: Nonverbal Behaviour Experiments
Choose any TWO of the following nonverbal behaviour experiments (listed below) to try out over the course of one week in your daily interactions with your family, friends, colleagues, and/or strangers. Apply the knowledge gained from this course and analyse how the display of different nonverbal behaviours can influence communication with the people around you.
1) Applying Egan’s (1975) SOLER acronym in listening and conversing with others.
2) Holding a power pose every day at the start of the day for 2 minutes.
3) Maintaining eye contact and displaying more macro facial expressions during online seminars.
4) Maintaining an upright sitting posture when doing work and/or assignments.
5) Using more emojis in your instant messaging chats.
Appraise how the chosen two displays of nonverbal behaviours over a period of one week influenced your communication with family, friends, and colleagues/strangers. Share your experience of this in a 3 minute vlog. As an applied course on nonverbal behaviours, you must be clearly featured in the video and you should recognise the importance of effective displays of nonverbal behaviours by displaying effective verbal and nonverbal presentation skills throughout your vlog.
Please ensure your vlog follows the format of:
Introduction (10 marks): Introduce yourself and state which two nonverbal behaviours (from the list above) you tried out, why you chose these behaviours, and the contexts of these behaviours.
Content (30 marks): Clearly explain which behaviours you found to be easier and which behaviours you found to be more challenging. Reflect on why the different nonverbal behaviours may have positively or negatively influenced your communication and relationships. You must use empirical evidence to support your claims here, and this can be done either by referring to the reference as you speak or video editing the references into your video. You should also include your reference list at the end of the video, in APA format.
Conclusion (10 marks): Summarise your overall experience completing the nonverbal behaviours experiments, together with a short reflection of the experience.
Presentation Skills (40 marks): Effectively show good verbal and nonverbal presentation skills.
Additional instructions:
• The video must not be shorter than 2:45 minutes and no longer than 3:00 minutes.
• Your video must be saved as an MP4 file.
• It is highly recommended that you use your smartphone for this assignment. There are guidelines uploaded on Canvas on how to shoot videos from your mobile device.
• Please make sure you are positioned in the frame of your video, with your upper torso clearly visible.
• Audio for the video should be recorded in actual speed and without any sound effects to adjust the tone/pitch/speech rate.
• Zoom recordings are not recommended, as your video screen will be too small.
Class Participation (10 marks)
As an applied course on nonverbal behaviours, it is important for you to be active and participate in all seminars. Marks will be awarded for participating in class with your video cameras turned on. If you are unable to attend class, you will have the option of adding your participation in our class activities from viewing the classroom recording in the respective week’s discussion board.

Maybe using more emojis made your conversations feel more friendly and informal, but could have been misinterpreted by colleagues. If you found SOLER helpful, explain how maintaining open body posture (from SOLER) made the other person feel more comfortable and encouraged them to share more. Back up your reflections with research—refer to studies on how these nonverbal cues impact communication. You can either mention the references as you speak or edit them into your video as on-screen text, which makes your presentation more polished.
Don’t forget to include your APA reference list at the end. Having solid, empirical evidence shows you’ve not just applied the concepts but also understand the theory behind them.
Conclusion (10 marks):
Your conclusion should summarise the overall experience—what did you learn from these experiments? Keep it short and reflective. For example, did the nonverbal behaviours change how others responded to you? What will you take away from this in future interactions? End on a note of personal growth, like how these experiments made you more aware of your own body language and communication style.
Presentation Skills (40 marks):
This section is heavily weighted, so how you present your ideas is just as important as the content. Here are a few tips:
- Nonverbal Presentation Skills: Since this is about nonverbal behaviours, be mindful of how you present yourself on camera. Make sure your posture is upright, use hand gestures to emphasize points, and maintain eye contact with the camera. If you talk about maintaining eye contact in online meetings, you should model that behaviour in your vlog.
- Verbal Presentation Skills: Speak clearly and confidently. Avoid filler words like “um” or “uh” and make sure your speech is well-paced. Practice beforehand so that your delivery feels natural but still polished.
