Requirements:

This Tutor-Marked Assignment 01 (TMA01) requires you to create a one-page report, which includes an introduction, observartions, and discussion.

The MRT Experiment

  • Being in close proximity with others may be uncomfortable, in part due to reduced personal space. This phenomenon can be observed on public transport (e.g., trains or buses). The research conducted by Yang, Shiwakoti, and Tay (2024) examined the factors that influenced whether passengers choose to stand or sit on a train.
  • Read the article for more information: https://ietresearch.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1049/itr2.12546
  • Conduct an experiment by observing passengers’ nonverbal behaviours (NVB) on MRT trains. Your task is to recognise the role of proxemics and nonverbal behaviours in the choice of seats
    on MRT trains.

Our Writer’s Comment

This TMA is deceptively challenging because it compresses observation, analysis, and academic writing into a strict one-page limit. Students are assessed not on how much they write, but on how precisely they observe and how clearly they interpret nonverbal behaviour.

A common weakness lies in the Observations section, where students either over-analyse behaviours or list them without coherence. High-scoring submissions keep observations factual and descriptive, reserving explanation strictly for the Discussion. Another frequent issue is vague reporting of proxemics. Strong answers clearly distinguish between sitting choices, interpersonal distance, and accompanying nonverbal cues such as gaze avoidance or posture orientation.

General Tips to Improve Your Score

Follow the one-page structure strictly
Anything beyond one page will not be marked, regardless of quality.

Separate observation from interpretation
Describe what you saw first; explain why only in the Discussion.

Be systematic in NVB reporting
Cover facial expressions, posture, gaze, and proxemics consistently across all observed passengers.

Use theory selectively
A small number of well-applied concepts is stronger than excessive referencing.
