Nancy, 32-year-old primary school PE teacher, used to be a national mid-distance runner and had competed at the South East Asian games for over six years. She got married three years ago and is currently paying off her house loan. Her elderly parents live with her.
Six months ago, when she went cycling, she misgauged the size of the drainage covers and her bicycle tire got caught in the cover. She was thrown off her bicycle and sustained severe spinal injuries. Her doctors told her that she would not be able to walk again and that since she had
also sustained nerve damages, her condition may slowly deteriorate. As an ex-national runner,
she is still in a state of shock, but at the same time, her competitive nature wants to prove her doctors wrong.
Due to her injuries, she is unable to work and this has affected her source of income. The financial burden, the inability to do things by herself and many other issues as a result of this injury has made her feel very anxious and annoyed.
Using Kübler-Ross’s stages of grief model, explain the psychosocial issues faced by Nancy.

Our Writer’s CommentÂ
This assignment is designed to assess students’ understanding of business practices.
To secure an A+ grade, adhere to these guidelines and make sure your work aligns with the grading criteria:
Question 1: Applying Kübler-Ross’s Stages of Grief (25 Marks)
When tackling this question, focus on how Nancy’s situation aligns with each stage of grief. Start by clearly identifying the stages—denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance—and then explain how Nancy might be experiencing each one. For example, she could be in denial about the severity of her injury and her desire to prove the doctors wrong might be part of the bargaining stage. Be detailed in connecting her emotional and psychological responses to each stage. The key is to demonstrate not just that you understand the model, but that you can apply it specifically to Nancy’s situation.
Question 2: Developing an Intervention Using the Biopsychosocial Model (25 Marks)
This is your chance to show how well you understand the biopsychosocial model. You’ll want to create a well-rounded intervention that considers biological, psychological, and social factors. For instance, the biological aspect could focus on pain management or physical therapy to address her injuries. The psychological component might involve therapy or counseling to help her cope with anxiety and depression. Socially, think about ways to involve her family or community to provide support. Be as specific as possible—outline the steps of your intervention and explain why each part is important for Nancy’s overall health.
Question 3: Creating a Pamphlet for Stress Management and Recovery (40 Marks)
This part of the assignment has a lot of weight, so it’s important to put effort into both the content and the design of your pamphlet. When providing tips for stress management, consider including practical advice like breathing exercises, time management strategies, or simple physical activities Nancy can do to stay active. Make sure the pamphlet is not just informative but also engaging. Use clear, friendly language, and organize the content so it’s easy to follow.
The creative aspect of the pamphlet is also crucial. Think about using visuals and colors that are calming and encouraging. The design should be clean and professional but also appealing to Nancy’s needs. If you mention parts of your intervention from Question 2, make sure it ties in seamlessly with the overall message of the pamphlet.
Final Thoughts
You’re already doing well, but by deepening your analysis in the first two questions and paying close attention to both content and design in your pamphlet, you can definitely push your score higher. The key is to be thorough, specific, and thoughtful in your approach—show that you really understand Nancy’s situation and can offer practical, compassionate support.
Keep up the good work, and with these tweaks, you’ll be on your way to an even better score!
