Module / Subject / School:

PSY263: Group Dynamics

Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS)

Requirements:

Part 1: Online Discussion Board (10 marks)

Select ONE academic online journal article related to the essay question in Part 2.

Briefly discuss the selected journal article (DO NOT copy the abstract of the article) and examine how the theoretical concept and empirical research discussed in the journal article are relevant to the essay question in Part 2. Your discussion of the journal article should be 200 words. Present the reference of the journal article in APA 7th format

Part 2: Essay Questions (80 marks)

Not everyone who joins a group is a “joiner,” and people who prefer independence over association are not necessarily “loners.” But people differ from each other in many ways—in personality, motivations, and past experiences—and these differences predispose some people to join groups and others to remain apart (Forsyth, 2019).

Apply relevant concepts and demonstrate knowledge of the relationship between personality and group fit and appraise the extent that you agree that the closer the fit between an individual’s personality characteristics and the group’s purpose and organization, the more likely the individual will seek to join the group.

This assignment is designed to assess students’ understanding of business practices.

To secure an A+ grade, adhere to these guidelines and make sure your work aligns with the grading criteria:

Part 1: Online Discussion Board (10 marks)

This part requires you to find an academic journal article related to the essay topic in Part 2 and discuss how it connects to the essay question.

  1. Selecting the Right Journal Article:
Choose an article that focuses on the connection between personality and group dynamics or group fit. Make sure it’s a peer-reviewed journal, and that the theoretical concepts discussed directly relate to your essay. For example, look for articles on the Big Five personality traits or group cohesion and compatibility.
  2. Discussion (200 words):
    • Start with a quick summary of the article’s main findings, but don’t copy the abstract—make sure your summary reflects your understanding.
    • Next, explain how the theoretical concept from the article links to the essay question in Part 2. For example, if the article discusses the role of extroversion in group participation, explain how that personality trait could influence whether someone seeks to join a group with a collaborative or outgoing purpose.
    • Be specific in showing the connection. Use phrases like, “This article supports the idea that…” or “The study’s findings are relevant because…” to draw clear links between the research and the essay topic.
  3. Reference in APA 7th Edition:
Format the reference correctly. For example:

    • Forsyth, D. R. (2019). Group dynamics (7th ed.). Cengage Learning.

How to Improve:

  • Be precise and focus on how the article’s theoretical framework or research findings directly tie to your essay. Ensure your writing is concise but informative.
  • Double-check your APA citation for accuracy.

Part 2: Essay (80 marks)

In the essay, you need to explore the relationship between personality and group fit, and whether a closer fit between personality traits and a group’s purpose increases the likelihood of joining that group.

  1. Introduction (100-150 words):
    • Open by introducing the concept of group fit and personality traits. Mention that different personalities are predisposed to join groups that align with their values and preferences.
    • Clearly state your thesis, which should answer the question: Do you agree that the closer the fit between an individual’s personality and a group, the more likely they are to join? Briefly mention the concepts you’ll explore to support your stance.
  2. Body Paragraphs (600-700 words):
    • Concepts of Personality and Group Fit: Use theories like the Big Five personality traits (e.g., openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism) to explain how these traits influence group joining behavior. For example, extroverts may be more inclined to join social groups, while those high in conscientiousness may be drawn to structured, goal-oriented groups.
    • Empirical Evidence: Use research to back up your claims. Studies that show how personality traits influence group behavior or success in group settings will strengthen your argument. For example, refer to studies that show extroverted individuals thrive in collaborative work environments.
    • Group Characteristics and Fit: Discuss how groups with clear purposes (e.g., academic, social, or work-related) attract certain personalities. For instance, people who value independence might prefer groups with a more flexible structure, while those who enjoy socializing might prefer groups with a more communal focus.
    • Challenges to Group Fit: You can also address the opposite—why some people may choose not to join a group despite having a compatible personality. Consider external factors like time constraints or past negative group experiences.

How to Improve:

  • Provide a balance of theoretical explanation and real-world examples. For instance, you can mention how specific personality types (like introverts) may find certain groups less appealing despite fitting the group’s purpose.
  • Stay focused on how personality and group purpose align, and how this drives someone to join a group. This will keep your argument relevant and cohesive.
  1. Conclusion (100-150 words):
    • Summarize your key points and reaffirm your thesis. End with a clear statement on the relationship between personality traits and the likelihood of joining a group.
    • You can also mention how understanding this relationship can be useful in real-world contexts, such as in the workplace or educational settings.

How to Improve:

  • Ensure your conclusion ties everything together. Avoid introducing new information—just summarize the main points and reinforce your stance.

General Tips for Scoring Higher:

  • Use Empirical Evidence: Empirical studies should be central to your argument. Refer to them throughout the essay to support your points and add credibility to your discussion.
  • Clear Structure: Organize your essay with clear headings for each section, such as Introduction, Personality and Group Fit, Empirical Evidence, Challenges to Group Fit, and Conclusion. This will help make your writing flow logically.
  • APA Formatting: Make sure all your references are correctly cited using APA 7th edition formatting. Both in-text citations and the reference list should be accurate.
  • Proofread for Clarity and Grammar: Check for any grammar or clarity issues. A well-structured, error-free essay is easier to read and will give you a better chance of scoring higher.
