Part 2a: Essay (75 marks)
Please answer this section with reference to the following quote and guiding parts. Your answer must be structured like an essay. All parts (i, ii, iii) must be addressed, but you do not have to include the letters (i, ii, iii) in your essay.
âIâm a typical middle child. Iâm the mediator. The one that makes everything okay, puts their own needs aside to make sure everybodyâs happy.â â Jennifer Jason Leigh
i. Outline and describe the following concepts in your own words: (20 marks)
1. Birth order effect
2. Parenting styles
ii. Examine and discuss the literature on the birth order effect and parenting styles, with a focus on articles published within the last 20 years. Your essay must be supported by a minimum of five academic sources. Based on the research you presented, describe whether you agree or do not agree with the quote above. (40 marks)
iii. Additionally, reflect on your own upbringing â did your parents treat you differently from your siblings based on birth order? Feel free to include any reasons you think could explain the differential treatment. If you are an only child, or prefer not to talk about your own childhood, you may discuss the experiences of seeing another adult (e.g., aunt/neighbour/godparent/ parentâs friend etc.) raising their multiple children.
You may focus on whether there were any parenting style differences in terms of
1. discipline of each child (i.e., what happens when one child misbehaved)
2. warmth given to each child (e.g., level of emotional support etc.). (15 marks)
General guidelines:
As a starting point, you may refer to Chapter 14 on âThe Familyâ in your textbook. You may also refer to other chapters/topics that you deem relevant to answer the question.
Read articles related to the question to get a basic understanding of the topic. Reference to relevant research studies and examples is essential. You may use the articles shared by your groupmates in the Online Discussion Board. You may need to read beyond the resources provided by your group members to gain a deeper understanding and incorporate this information in your discussion. You will also need to demonstrate the skill of being concise to fit the material into the word limit of 1,200 words.
Please be reminded that repeating what is stated in your readings, even if you cite the source, is considered plagiarism. It is best that you present the main ideas in your own words based on your understanding.
Per the universityâs policy, you are allowed to make use of AI tools but you must include an acknowledgement of the use, insert the name of the tool used and what it was used for.
Furthermore, you must also describe how the information was generated by you (include the prompts you used), the output obtained and how you changed the output to suit your purposes. For example:
⢠I acknowledge the use of [name of AI tool, provide a link] to generate materials for background research in the writing of this assignment.
⢠The following prompts were submitted into [name of AI tool] with the following prompts: [insert prompts]
⢠The output obtained was: [paste the output generated by the AI tool]
⢠The output was changed by me in the following ways: [explain what you did]
There are many sources that you can access from the library or from the library eResources.
Take care to assess the credibility of your sources, especially those found online. For example, Wikipedia is not a credible source.
Remember that argument and critical evaluation will make for a better essay than a descriptive essay. This essay may require some description of relevant theories and findings but it is more important to present analytical argument driven material to demonstrate critical thinking.
Part 2b: Peer Review Form (2 marks)
Download the file containing the Peer Review Form (like the one shown below) and copyâ andâpaste it into your TMA01 document in the appendix section (after the reference section).

Our Writer’s CommentÂ
This assignment is designed to assess students’ understanding of business practices.
To secure an A+ grade, adhere to these guidelines and make sure your work aligns with the grading criteria:
Part 1: Online Discussion Board (13 Marks)
Task 1 (3 Marks):
- Selecting the Journal Article: Make sure you choose a high-quality, peer-reviewed article that is directly relevant to the essay topic. This could be on birth order effects or parenting styles, as these are central to the essay.
- APA 7 Reference: Pay close attention to getting the APA format exactly right. If the article has a DOI, include it. If it doesnât, ensure the URL is correct. Donât lose marks on simple formatting errors.
Task 2 (6 Marks):
- Summarizing the Article: This is where you should provide a concise summary of the main points of the article in your own words. Instead of copying the abstract, try to focus on how the article supports your essay topic.
- For example, if the article discusses how parenting styles vary based on birth order, explain that in 1-2 sentences and connect it to the broader topic.
- Mention key findings, theories, or frameworks from the article and how these relate to birth order effectsor parenting styles.
Task 3 (4 Marks):
- Responding to Peers: When commenting on your group membersâ posts, make sure your comments are constructive. You could:
- Ask a question to encourage further discussion.
- Suggest another angle they could explore or point out how their article could relate to your own research.
- Keep your responses short but insightfulâremember, you have a 50-word limit for each comment.
Part 2a: Essay (75 Marks)
i. Birth Order Effect & Parenting Styles (20 Marks)
- Birth Order Effect: Youâll need to define this concept in your own words. Explain how birth order can affect personality, behavior, and social roles. Be concise but thorough.
- You could refer to Adlerâs theory of birth order or more modern research.
- Parenting Styles: Define the different styles (authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, etc.) and explain how they influence childrenâs development.
- Make sure you link these concepts together. For instance, how might a firstborn experience more authoritarian parenting compared to a lastborn who experiences permissive parenting?
ii. Examine and Discuss the Literature (40 Marks)
- Recent Research: Focus on articles published in the last 20 years, as requested. Use at least five academic sources to back up your discussion. Be sure to critically engage with the literature rather than just summarizing it.
- You could compare older theories (e.g., Adler) with modern research findings and explore any controversies or gaps in the literature.
- Donât forget to critically evaluate. For instance, you could highlight how some studies might support the birth order effect, while others show no significant impact.
- Agree or Disagree with the Quote: After discussing the research, tie it back to the quote from Jennifer Jason Leigh. Do you think middle children generally act as mediators due to their birth order? Use your research to substantiate your stance. Whether you agree or disagree, explain why using evidence.
iii. Reflect on Your Own Upbringing (15 Marks)
- Personal Reflection: This section should be personal and reflective. Discuss your experience or someone elseâs if youâre an only child or prefer not to talk about yourself.
- Make sure to tie your reflection to specific parenting styles. For example, âAs a firstborn, I experienced more strict discipline, which aligns with research suggesting that firstborns often receive more authoritative parenting.â
- If you prefer, you can discuss how a friend or relative raised their children differently based on birth order and parenting styles.
- Two Focus Areas: Be sure to address both:
- Discipline: Were rules stricter or more lenient depending on birth order?
- Warmth/Support: Did parents show more emotional support to one child over another?
Writing and Structure Tips:
- Introduction: Set the stage by briefly introducing the birth order effect and parenting styles. Then, explain how your essay will approach the quote.
- Body: Follow the structure outlined by the assignment, but donât label your sections with âiâ, âiiâ, âiiiâ. Instead, make smooth transitions between each part.
- Conclusion: Wrap up by summarizing the key points. Reaffirm your position on whether you agree with the quote and why.
Part 2b: Peer Review Form (2 Marks)
- Be Clear and Helpful: When completing your peer review form, make sure your comments are constructive and helpful. Point out both strengths and areas for improvement in your peerâs essay. This shows engagement and critical thinking.
Final Tips:
- Critical Thinking: While description is necessary, ensure you critically evaluate the theories and research. Itâs important to not just explain concepts but also compare, contrast, and discuss implications.
- Clarity and Conciseness: You only have 1,200 words, so make sure every sentence adds value. Be concise and stay focused on the key points.
- APA Referencing: Double-check your APA 7 format to avoid losing easy marks on citations.
- Balanced Argument: When discussing the birth order effect and parenting styles, try to present a balanced view. Acknowledge limitations in the research or situations where the birth order effect may not apply.
