PSY205 (Social Psychology): Tutor-Marked Assignment 01 Presentation

Module / Subject / School:

PSY205: Social Psychology

Singapore University of Social Sciences

Requirements:

  • Presentation (1300 words +/- 10%).
  • Part A: Considering the extract by Power (2024), examine how basic principles underlying how we form social beliefs and judgments account for the reported discrepancy between facts and perception. Describe at least four psychological concepts in your response, alongside providing relevant empirical support.
  • Part B: Develop a better understanding of human fallibility in judging, perceiving, and explaining our social worlds as you analyse the extent your arguments in Part A apply to the Singapore context. To this end, you shall apply at least three of the four principles you cited in Part A to at least one local example to discuss the applicability of these concepts to local culture.

What we score:

Our Writer’s Comment

This assignment tests whether students actually understand how social beliefs and judgments work in real life. Many scripts weaken because they focus too much on American politics and forget that this is a social psychology paper. The case is only a vehicle to apply theory.

Another common issue is shallow use of concepts. Students often name ideas like availability heuristic or confirmation bias but fail to explain how these processes distort perception despite clear economic data. Part B creates further problems when students struggle to translate theory into the Singapore context in a meaningful way. When handled properly, this is a strong scoring paper. In previous intakes, our submissions usually land between 74 and 82%.

General Tips to Improve Your Score for This Assignment

  • Stay grounded in social psychology: The focus must remain on social beliefs and judgments. Political discussion should always serve theory application.
  • Choose your concepts carefully: Select concepts that clearly explain perception gaps such as heuristics, attribution errors, or motivated reasoning. Forced concepts weaken analysis.
  • Use empirical evidence properly: Each concept needs at least one solid study to support it. Textbook explanations alone are not enough.
  • Make Part B contextual and specific: Singapore examples should be concrete and culturally grounded. Vague references to local attitudes score poorly.
  • Control structure and word count: Clear separation between concepts helps markers follow your argument and protects your marks.
