Our Writer’s Comment

This assignment is designed to assess students’ understanding of business practices.

To secure an A+ grade, adhere to these guidelines and make sure your work aligns with the grading criteria:

Question 1(a): Analyzing the Domestic Impacts in Thailand

1. Comprehensive Analysis

When analyzing the impacts of Thailand’s decriminalization of cannabis, make sure to cover a wide range of effects. This includes social, economic, legal, and public health impacts. For example, think about how cannabis legalization has affected the local economy, tourism, law enforcement, and public health outcomes.

  • Tip: Use specific examples to illustrate your points. For instance, discuss how the rise of marijuana dispensaries in tourist areas might influence local communities or law enforcement efforts. The more detailed and specific your analysis, the stronger your answer will be.

2. Address Both Positive and Negative Impacts

Don’t just focus on one side of the argument. It’s important to consider both the positive and negative impacts of decriminalization. This balanced approach shows critical thinking and a deeper understanding of the issue.

  • Tip: You might discuss positive economic impacts, such as job creation, alongside potential negative consequences, like increased access to cannabis among youth.

Question 1(b): Assessing Singapore’s Position on Decriminalization

1. Ground Your Analysis in Theory

For this part of the question, make sure you’re using relevant concepts from crime, justice, and punishment to assess Singapore’s stance on cannabis. Concepts like deterrence, retribution, and public safety are all relevant here. Explain how these theories support or conflict with Singapore’s current policies.

  • Tip: Don’t just state the theories—apply them. For example, discuss how the deterrence theory might justify Singapore’s strict stance on cannabis to prevent drug abuse.

2. Justify with Credible Research

To strengthen your assessment, reference credible research studies that support your arguments. Look for studies that discuss the effects of cannabis decriminalization in other countries and how those outcomes might apply to Singapore.

  • Tip: Use a mix of sources, including academic articles, government reports, and credible news outlets, to back up your points. This will show that your analysis is well-researched and grounded in evidence.

3. Engage with Singapore’s Context

When assessing Singapore’s position, make sure to consider the unique social, cultural, and legal context of the country. Discuss why Singapore might prioritize a different approach compared to Thailand, considering factors like population density, cultural attitudes towards drugs, and the country’s strict law enforcement practices.

  • Tip: You could explore how Singapore’s focus on public health and safety shapes its drug policies, and why the government might view cannabis decriminalization as a risk.

General Tips for Both Parts

1. Structure Your Responses Clearly

A well-organized response is easier to follow and tends to score higher. Use clear headings or paragraphs to separate your analysis of Thailand’s impacts from your assessment of Singapore’s position. This will make your arguments more coherent and easier for the grader to follow.

2. Reflect on Feedback

Think about the feedback you received on your 78% score. Were there areas where your analysis could have been deeper or where you needed more evidence? Address these areas in your next submission to improve your score.

3. Write Clearly and Persuasively

Make sure your writing is clear, concise, and persuasive. Avoid overly complex language or jargon—your goal is to communicate your ideas effectively. Also, proofread your work to eliminate any grammatical errors or awkward phrasing.

By focusing on these areas, you can improve your analysis and presentation, helping to boost your score.

Remember, the key is to be thorough, balanced, and well-supported in your arguments. Good luck!
