Module / Subject / School:

POL103 Government and Politics of Singapore

Singapore University of Social Sciences

Requirements:

Question (100 marks)
Political Parties and Elections
Singapore’s electoral politics is unique when compared to most other states. Singapore has one of the longest unbroken record of a popularly elected single-party government in the world, with the People’s Action Party (PAP) having won all elections with an overwhelming majority since independence. The electoral politics in Singapore today is very different from how it was when Singapore held its first election after independence. In particular, electoral activities (which includes political parties’ election campaigning, alliance formations, working the ground, etc.) and electoral competition (i.e., the intensity of electoral contests
and the predictability of election results) have evolved considerably over the years.

Identify and discuss the key ways in which electoral activities and competition have evolved since Singapore’s independence and show how they have shaped Singapore’s political landscape. Your answer should thereafter include a detailed analysis of how these evolutions stand to impact Singapore’s electoral landscape in the near future.
