Our Writer’s Comment

This assignment is designed to assess students’ understanding of business practices.

To secure an A+ grade, adhere to these guidelines and make sure your work aligns with the grading criteria:

Step 1: Understanding Assumptions

The assignment asks you to reflect on the assumptions that drive your thinking and actions. To begin, think about how you approach leadership situations—what are the unconscious beliefs or principles guiding your decisions? For example, do you assume that clear communication solves most problems, or that a hands-off leadership style works best? Try to identify a few of these assumptions, and reflect on how they have influenced your behavior in different contexts—whether it’s in team settings, one-on-one interactions, or when facing challenges.

Step 2: Applying Course Concepts

The next part is connecting your reflections to the four capabilities mentioned: sense-making, relating, visioning, and inventing. You’ll want to explore how well you’re currently practicing these in your leadership. For example, sense-making is about interpreting and understanding situations. You might reflect on a situation where you misread the dynamics of a team, or where you accurately understood and addressed a complex issue. Relating involves building trust and fostering relationships—think about how you interact with others and whether you’re building connections that encourage engagement and collaboration.

Visioning refers to your ability to create and communicate a compelling vision. Have you had opportunities to inspire others with a clear direction, or have you struggled with getting people on board with your ideas? Inventing focuses on problem-solving and adapting to challenges in creative ways. Use examples from your experience where you either succeeded or fell short in these areas.

Step 3: Hero and Zero Analysis

The “Hero and Zero” concept is key to this assignment. Think of two contrasting leadership situations—one where you feel you excelled (Hero) and one where you didn’t perform as well (Zero). For the Hero scenario, highlight how you used the sense-making, relating, visioning, and inventing capabilities to navigate the situation successfully. Show what worked and why.

In the Zero scenario, reflect on where things went wrong. Was there a failure in communication (relating)? Did you misinterpret a situation (sense-making)? Be honest and critical in your analysis, showing how you could improve. The point here is to demonstrate self-awareness and a learning mindset.

Step 4: Structure and Clarity

With a 1,000-1,500 word limit, you’ll want to stay focused and organized. A clear structure with an introduction, Hero reflection, Zero reflection, and conclusion will keep your work cohesive. In the conclusion, summarize your key takeaways—what have you learned about your leadership, and how will you apply these insights moving forward? This should tie back to your development as a leader.

Step 5: Depth of Reflection

Depth matters here. Avoid surface-level observations and really dig into how and why certain actions or assumptions played out the way they did. Use specific examples and tie them back to the course content.
