Requirements: 

In teams of four, students are required to source three separate HRM-related articles that have featured in local or international newspapers, magazines or on social media, for example LinkedIn. Teams may draw on sources such as the Financial Times, Business Week, The Economist etc., but are not limited to these. However, the articles chosen should come from two or more publications. 

The articles selected should relate directly to topics we are covering in the module but may also include HR challenges being faced by organisations or issues relating to the future of work. The articles selected should all relate to different topics, and should have been published in the in the last two years. 

Report:

Students are required to write report on the three articles. This report should: 

  • • Briefly summarise each article. 
  • • Explain why the article was selected, that is why it was interesting, informative and/or insightful. 
  • • Critically review the article in light of the available academic literature. 
  • • Identify any practical implications of the article for organisations, including, for example, HR practitioners, line managers or employees. 

The report: 

  • Should be 2,500 words (+/- 10%). 
  • Should be typed with page numbering. 
  • Should be clearly structured with consistent use of headings and sub-headings. 
  • Should be clearly referenced in line with the Harvard referencing guidelines and include a bibliography listing the sources of any idea, theme or argument that has been found in the literature and cited within the report. 

The report should include: 

  • A cover sheet with the team member names, student numbers, course title and code, word count and plagiarism statement (see below). 
  • A short introduction. 
  • A main section. 
  • A short conclusion. 
  • Appendices if required. 
  • A bibliography. 
  • Note, the word count is to include the introduction, main section and conclusion. 

Reports will be judged on: 

  • Structure: your report should follow a clear and logical structure, be well presented and clearly referenced throughout 
  • Content and analysis: your report should clearly relate the articles to available academic literature and to the real world by identifying, for example, challenges that might exist for organisations and how those challenges might be overcome. Your own experiences are valuable and bringing them to bear in your report is strongly encouraged. It shows that you clearly understand the literature and how it can be applied in the real world. 
  • Academic reading: your assignment should provide evidence of additional reading outside of the core textbook and readings by drawing upon supplementary readings, websites and any other means of research that you find useful. 

When completing this assessed component of the module, while it is acceptable for groups to use AI tools to source relevant articles or to aid students looking to better understand a particular concept or issue, it is not acceptable to use such tools to produce the written report. To do so would breach the Universities rules in respect of academic integrity. Further, being a group assignment, it is expected each member of the group plays a role in the selection of appropriate articles, that each member of the group reviews all three articles chosen and each member of the group participates in the process of meeting the objectives of the report as noted above. 

Presentation:

Students will also be required to record a 15-minute presentation based on your group report. Presentation lengths must stick to this timeline (+/- 10%). 

Presentations will be judged on: 

  • Structure: presentations should follow a clear, logical structure. 
  • Content and analysis: presentations should meet the expectations noted above. 
  • Academic reading: presentations should show a clear understanding of the articles and the relevant HRM literature. 
  • Presentation: presentations should be delivered in a clear and impactful manner. 
  • Timekeeping: presentations should be 15 mins (+/- 10%).

Make sure your examples are concrete and actionable, not just theoretical.

5. Report Structure

Keep your report well-structured. Use headings and sub-headings for each section, like “Introduction,” “Article Summaries,” “Critical Review,” “Practical Implications,” and “Conclusion.” Each section should flow logically. A strong introduction should briefly mention what the report will cover, and the conclusion should summarize key takeaways and perhaps suggest further reading or ideas.

6. Referencing and Presentation

Make sure all references are in Harvard format. Citations need to be consistent throughout, and you should include a bibliography. You’ll score higher if you pull from additional readings outside the core textbook, so make sure to use academic journals or books to support your critique.

7. Presentation (15 Minutes)
