Nanyang Technological University
Requirements:Â
- Tasks. This assignment comprises three tasks or questions designed to help the Officerson-Course to consolidate, analyze, assimilate, and appreciate (the strength, limitations, relevance, etc.) the concepts, theories and ideas learned, and knowledge shared during lessons LC 1-2 to LC 1-5, and to enhance their self-awareness of their leadership and development. The essay must address each of the following:
- Task 1 (10%). Based on your learning from lessons LC 1-2 to LC 1-5, expressed in your own words, “what leadership means to you and why it matters in the SAF?” In other words, share how you now make sense of the idea of leadership and its importance to the SAF in relation to your own experiences and what you have learnt from the lessons.
- Task 2 (40%). Describe TWO significant insights (i.e., something that is or was an “Ah Ha!” moment) that you have gained and explain why (ONE from EACH of the following sets of lessons):

Our Writer’s CommentÂ
This assignment rewards depth of reflection backed by leadership theory. Strong submissions anchor personal experience firmly within established models such as situational leadership and command effectiveness. Where many students struggle is drifting into narrative without analysis or relying too heavily on SAF doctrine without engaging academic literature.
Common issues include weak integration of personal experience with theory, superficial discussion of leadership models, and unclear positioning in Task 3 where arguments need balance rather than opinion. When done properly, this assignment scores well. Similar submissions we have worked on have achieved results above 75%.
General Tips to Improve Your Score for This Assignment
- Start with experience but analyse it: Personal reflection matters only when it is clearly linked to leadership frameworks and supported by evidence.
- Use leadership models accurately: Models like FRLM and situational leadership must be applied correctly.
- Balance reflection and literature: Markers expect personal insight supported by credible academic sources.
- Handle Task 3 with restraint: Strong answers acknowledge complexity and limits rather than pushing a single solution.
- Respect structure and word count: Clear task separation and controlled length help markers follow your argument and protect marks.
Overall, clarity of argument and disciplined use of theory are what differentiate average submissions from high-scoring ones.
