The purpose of this assignment is to assess students’ capacity to generate a new business idea capable of supporting a new business venture and developing a business plan that outlines how the proposed business venture will be developed and how financially attractive the firm may become, with a view to convincing one or more financiers to invest in the enterprise.

The proposed business venture should be a for-profit entity, requiring an initial capital investment of less than SGD 300,000, and centered around e-commerce.

This assignment is demanding because it requires students to think simultaneously as entrepreneurs, analysts, and investors. It is not enough to present an interesting business idea; students must demonstrate that the idea is commercially viable, strategically grounded, and realistically executable within the stated constraints.

A common weakness is treating the portfolio as a descriptive business plan. High-scoring submissions take a more critical approach by justifying why the opportunity exists, how market and industry conditions support it, and whether the team has the capabilities to sustain the venture long term. Another frequent issue is weak integration across sections, where the business idea, market analysis, and team considerations do not reinforce one another.
