Have a main body comprising no more than 2,500 words
    Be word processed
  • Include a List of References and be correctly and adequately referenced within the text (using the APA 6th Referencing system)
Have a reasonable and suitable range of appendices to support main report (these are excluded from word count).

Format

  • You can access comprehensive Guidance Notes on Report Writing via Moodle. All pages should be numbered, including appendices.
  • Care should be taken to ensure each Appendix is properly cross-referenced within the main body of the report.
  • Remember all academic writing is in the third person, singular, present tense.

Structure

Reports should be structured as follows:

  • Title Page
  • Executive Summary
  • Contents page
  • Introduction (Terms of reference – Aims and Objectives – Approach and Structure)
  • Main Report – Discussion and Analysis
  • Report Conclusions and Recommendations
  • List of References
  • Numbered Appendices (provide appropriate supporting Information to main report)
  • N.B. Use numbered headings and sub-headings throughout)

Methodology
Students are expected to undertake appropriate research in the preparation of their report. In any event, it is always necessary to justify the reliability of the information upon which any piece of academic/management writing is based. As such, students should briefly explain how their study has been approached, and outline all secondary and primary research undertaken in its preparation.

Length Limit
It is important that you observe the stipulated limit regarding the overall length of your Report. Whilst this limit refers only to the main body of the report, care should also be taken to ensure that the number, and length, of any appendices – while excluded from the 3,000 word limit – is appropriate and reasonable. You are required to indicate the total word count of the main body of your Report at the end of the “Conclusions and Recommendations” section. It is normal practice to allow ± 10% of a stipulated limit before penalties begin to be imposed for undue length.

Word Processing
All student work should be word processed using Arial size 12 font.

Referencing
As with an academic essay – It is crucial that you provide a list of references at the end of your report, and reference adequately within your written work. You should note that only the APA 6th System of Referencing is acceptable at Edinburgh Napier University.

Referencing, and the related issue of plagiarism, are both comprehensively covered during Programme Induction. You can access comprehensive guidance notes on both referencing and plagiarism within Moodle.

As you prepare your report, you are also most strongly encouraged to run drafts through the “Turnitin” anti-plagiarism software, available on Moodle, in order to check the level of originality of your work, and thus your liability to possible allegations of plagiarism. “Turnitin”. Enables Academic staff to check levels of originality at a glance.
