Requirements:
Assessment 1 – Platformisation, the before and after
The first assessment combines the lessons learnt in the first two blocks (weeks 1 -3). For the assessment you will write a 1500 word paper.
Before you start, you need to pick one of the following types of activities:
- Social interaction (e.g., interpersonal communication with family and friends)
- Information seeking (e.g., keeping up with news and current affairs)
- Self-presentation (e.g., maintaining a site or blog, posting on social media)
- Entertainment (e.g., leisure activities such as listening to music, watch video)
The activity you choose, will be the topic of your paper. In the paper, you will describe the evolution of that activity chronologically…
- In the past: based on what you learnt from our tutorial discussion of the interviews with our older relatives (Week 3), as well as from the lecture on the brief history of the internet. The aim is to concisely reconstruct what it was like to engage in that activity in the late 1990s to early 2000s. Single out one key website/service, research it, and describe what it was like to use it. You are expected to blend in extracts/quotes of your own interview as illustrations, as well as visual materials sourced from the Wayback Machine (or elsewhere, online).
- In the present: based on what you learnt for our tutorial discussion about our own experiences (Week 2). Single out one contemporary platform, research it, and describe what it is like to use it. The aim is to concisely describe how the activity is different from before and what makes it different, again also including what you learnt from the lectures. You are expected to blend in a concise selection of your own image diary as illustrations.
- As affected by platformisation: expand your analysis of the singled-out platform and explain how this platform employs datafication, commodification, and selection. That is, apply these three concepts to the platform.
Important notes:
- There is an example paper available. This paper represents the standard for a high mark. You should use the same structure, but use the text itself as inspiration, not as a template. Your paper needs to be original, individual work. Any form of plagiarism is unacceptable. The example paper focuses on the activity of listening to music as a form of entertainment. It covers Napster and Spotify, applying the platformisation concepts to the latter. It is not allowed to discuss Napster and Spotify as the key past and present services in your paper.
- Assessments in this course build on each other. The contemporary platform you cover in this assessment can be used in the next assessments.
