Southern Cross University
Requirements:
This assessment is an analytical reflection of leadership and communication in a clinical context. Using Gibbs Reflective Cycle, you are required to reflect on a clinical example of your choosing. You will examine leadership and communication within the team. Your reflection requires you to be self-aware and to critically evaluate your involvement and interactions using evidence from the literature to support your discussions.
Briefly describe the situation. Which team members were involved? Who did you identify as a leader? It might have been you. Not your IPE facilitator if your example is your IPE workshop). What leadership style did they use?
Succinctly describe a clinical leadership scenario within a team you have encountered in ONE of the following:
1. whilst attending clinical placement or
2. in your health workplace or
3. in your IPE workshop.
Describe the scenario/situation, team members involved and the leadership style used (by the leader). Describe how this scenario relates to leadership and communication in a clinical context.
Outline feelings (before, during and after) about your chosen scenario.
This is self-awareness. e.g. How did you feel (before, during and after)? How did others around you feel? (this may also include patient/family). How did you feel about the outcome of the scenario and the leadership style evident?

Our Writer’s Comment
Excelling in this coursework requires careful preparation and reflection. The Gibbs Reflective Cycle provides a useful framework for examining a clinical scenario, analyzing leadership and communication, and evaluating one’s own involvement and interactions.
When selecting the scenario, it is important to choose one that offers rich opportunities for reflection on leadership and communication in a clinical context. It could be a situation encountered in clinical placement, a health workplace, or an IPE workshop. Briefly describe the situation, team members involved, and the leader’s leadership style.
To achieve a high grade, it is important to be self-aware, evaluating one’s own feelings before, during, and after the scenario. This requires introspection and a willingness to examine one’s own thoughts and emotions. Additionally, describing the feelings of others involved, including patients or family members, provides a more complete picture of the situation and adds depth to the analysis.
Finally, incorporating evidence from the literature is critical to demonstrating one’s understanding of leadership and communication in a clinical context. Citing relevant research and theories helps support the analysis and provides a stronger foundation for the reflection.
Overall, this assessment provides an opportunity to reflect on a clinical scenario, develop a deeper understanding of leadership and communication in a clinical context, and evaluate one’s own involvement and interactions. By being thorough and thoughtful in the preparation and reflection process, students can excel in this coursework.
