HRM358: Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace
Requirements:Â
Interview with a difference: “Interview with a Difference” involves interviewing a person (please interview only one person) whom you perceive as very different from you in terms of your cultural and/or social identity. The person should be at least 18 years old, not a family member or a relative. You are required to use course concepts covered in SU2-3 to document your experience and learnings from interviewing this person.
Here is a list of questions on which you may gather insights from your interviewee:
a) What are this person’s social identities? How are they similar or dissimilar to your identities?
b) What kind of stereotypes does this person encounter? How accurate are these stereotypes?
c) What was it like growing up as a member of these particular groups?
d) Has your interviewee ever experienced discrimination at work or in other ways?
e) How does his/her social identity impact their current personal interactions, work environment or career choices?

Our Writer’s CommentÂ
Start by selecting someone who truly represents a different cultural or social identity from you. This will make the interview more insightful and give you richer material to work with. When asking the questions, don’t just stick to the basics—dig deeper. If they mention a stereotype, ask for examples of how it has affected them. If they talk about discrimination, explore how it impacted their life or career.
When documenting your experience, connect your findings to course concepts from SU2-3. This shows that you’re not just recounting the interview, but also applying theoretical knowledge to analyze the experience. For example, if you discuss stereotypes, link it to theories about social identity or cultural biases that were covered in class.
Finally, be introspective in your reflection. How did the interview challenge your own perceptions or biases? What did you learn about your own social identity by understanding someone else’s? Being able to demonstrate personal growth from this experience will make your assignment stand out.
