Using sources in the public domain, discuss the way in which a responsible business has managed a specific contemporary ethical issue, one that required the business to make a decision. You must address the following questions:
1. Why was this understood to be an ethical issue?
2. How have individual, institutional and environmental factors (e.g. whistleblowing, public opinion) contributed to the issue?
3. How does this business’s response compare with less responsible businesses in similar circumstances?
The essay will be marked holistically with attention paid to the following dimensions:
1. Understanding of the factors that contribute to an issue being understood in terms of ethics
2. Critical evaluation of pertinent individual, institutional and environmental features
3. Coherent distinctions inform the identification of ‘responsible’ business
4. Use of reliable and relevant sources
5. Quality of argumentation.
The goals and objectives are the following: demonstrate a critical understanding of the need for and range of justifications for responsible business; demonstrate a critical understanding of the implications of responsible business for both individual action and institutional priorities, governance, and systems; make theoretically and empirically informed arguments about the nature of responsible business; and demonstrate a personal commitment to responsible business practices.
