Question 1
Review the article, “Call me by my English name” (2022, April 17), in order to develop a field study that explores the relationship between a cultural dimension and workplace communication preferences in an industry/sector of your choice
Begin by reviewing the required reading.
Upon understanding the relevance of the article content to this module, design a field study using in-depth qualitative interviews with four interviewees from the same industry/sector (they needn’t be from the same company) who are in middle or top management positions. Your interview questions and their responses should assist you to explain the relationship between your interviewees’ cultural leaning and their preferences on how they like to be addressed at work and why.
Bear in mind that your literature review and its conceptual content should be coherent with your study, its research question(s), and your report of findings and implications. This assignment gives you free rein to choose a cultural dimension you are interested in (Chapter 1), to apply and discuss in relation to communication (Chapter 2) and managerial styles (Chapters 3 and 5).
Conduct a thorough literature review and write an introduction that will relate your selected cultural dimension to underlying theories relevant to workplace behaviour when managing teams and subordinates. For instance, a research question may look like, ‘the more collectivistic a manager, the more they prefer subordinates to address them by their initials, and not by their job titles.’ So collectivistic Assistant Director Ang Mo Kio tells his reporters to call him MK and not Dr Ang. In this example, the corresponding literature review will cover relevant theories, conceptual content, as well as empirical findings sourced from published books and academic journals, to support why this research question is valid and worthy of further study in this ECA. (30 marks, 840 words)
After the method section, share your results and discuss your respondents’ cultural leaning on the said dimension, their workplace communication preferences, and their workplace communication experiences. Ensure that your discussion is integrated with your earlier segments of literature review, research question, and method, to offer a smooth, eloquent investigation and analysis. (40 marks, 1,120 words)
Based on the content of the aforementioned report sections, identify real-world pitfalls and problems in order to propose suitable workplace communication ideas or guidelines that will promote effective cross-cultural communication in the workplace. Your recommendations should be coherent with the rest of your report body, and should be logical, and empirically supported against the context of your research question and field study.
