Assignment Description (100 marks)

Overview
In this assignment, you and your group members will apply the knowledge and skills that you learnt in this subject to a) develop research questions, b) analyse an existing dataset (about global life expectancy) using jamovi to answer those research questions, and c) interpret the results of your analyses.

Report
To that end, you will submit a 2,500-word report. The word count excludes the reference and appendix sections. Reports within ±10% of the word limit are accepted but penalties will be imposed for exceeding this allowance.

The report should comprise the following sections:
1. Introduction

  • Explain why it is important to study this area (global life expectancy)
  • Provide a brief overview of FOUR research questions you want to address in this study and discuss why is it important to address those research questions

2. Literature review, research questions, and hypotheses

  • In your own words, write a literature review about the variables that lead to the proposal of the four research questions and their accompanying hypotheses. The research questions should preferably address “gaps” in the research (i.e., areas that other researchers have not examined). However, research questions that replicate existing findings are also acceptable. (Note that the dataset should contain the variables of interest that you wish to study. If it does not, then, for the purposes of this assignment, please change the research question.)
  • Be sure to show how the literature review, especially the theories covered, supports the predictions you make
  • Use only academic sources (e.g., journal articles, book chapters) in this section and cite those that you discuss. Aim for a total of 6 to 9 journal articles.

3. Methodology
Describe the study design (i.e., how data are collected, see the Dataset section below)

4. Analyses

For each hypothesis, identify the most appropriate analysis and explain why that is the most appropriate analysis to use. Using jamovi, test each hypothesis and report the results.

  • Note 1. To demonstrate your ability to analyse different kinds of data, you are strongly recommended to use a variety of statistical analyses. Please avoid using the same analysis for all the research questions.
  • Note 2. It is possible that the most suitable analysis for your variables may not be something that we taught you. If in doubt, please consult your instructor for guidance.

5. Discussion and Conclusion

  • Discuss, based on the results of your analyses, what you have learnt about global life expectancy. Do your findings support your predictions? How similar or different are your findings from what is presented in the literature? What are the practical and/or theoretical implications of your findings?

6. Word count

  • State the final word count from the Introduction section to the Discussion and Conclusion section (inclusive of all headings and citations).

7. References

  • Provide the reference list for all the sources cited in your report.

8. Appendices:

  • Paste the jamovi output for all analyses. State clearly which research question the output addresses.

Note. Your report must adhere to APA standards of formatting and reference. It should also be clear, concise, and coherent. Please refer to this website for the latest APA style guide (7th edition): https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines.

Dataset
For this group assignment, you will analyse an existing data set on global life expectancy and factors that may affect it. Both the data and the codebook (which provides a bit more detail about the variables) are available on Canvas.

The dataset was created based on public domain data from GHO (Global Health Observatory) and UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Culture Organization). It covers the years 2000-2016 for 183 countries. For more details, please visit GHO and UNESCO to understand how the data was gathered.

Our Writer’s Comment

This assignment tests students on their understanding of the concepts.

To score well on this assignment, follow these guidelines:

Overview: You and your group members will apply the knowledge and skills learned in this subject to analyze an existing dataset on global life expectancy. The goal is to develop research questions, analyze the dataset using jamovi, and interpret the results. Your submission will be a 2,500-word report, excluding the reference and appendix sections. Aim to stay within ±10% of the word limit.

Report Sections:

  1. Introduction: Explain the importance of studying global life expectancy and provide an overview of the four research questions you want to address. Discuss the significance of these research questions.
  2. Literature review, research questions, and hypotheses: Write a literature review in your own words about the variables related to the research questions and their accompanying hypotheses. Address gaps in existing research or replicate previous findings. Support your predictions with relevant theories covered in the literature. Use academic sources such as journal articles and cite them properly. Aim for 6 to 9 journal articles.
  3. Methodology: Describe the study design and how data will be collected. Refer to the Dataset section for more details.
  4. Analyses: Identify the most appropriate analysis for each hypothesis and explain why. Use jamovi to test each hypothesis and report the results. Use a variety of statistical analyses to demonstrate your ability to analyze different kinds of data.
  5. Discussion and Conclusion: Discuss the findings of your analyses and their implications for global life expectancy. Evaluate whether your findings support your predictions and compare them to existing literature. Discuss the practical and theoretical implications of your findings.
  6. Word count: State the final word count from the Introduction section to the Discussion and Conclusion section, including all headings and citations.
  7. References: Provide a reference list for all the sources cited in your report following APA formatting guidelines (7th edition).
  8. Appendices: Include the jamovi output for all analyses and clearly indicate which research question each output addresses.

Additional Notes:

  • Adhere to APA standards of formatting and referencing throughout your report.
  • Ensure clarity, conciseness, and coherence in your writing.
  • Use the provided dataset on global life expectancy and factors affecting it, along with the accompanying codebook.
  • The dataset was created based on public domain data from GHO and UNESCO. Visit their websites for more details on data collection.

To score well, follow the APA style guide, provide a thorough literature review, conduct appropriate analyses using jamovi, and discuss the findings and implications of your research. Stay within the word limit and ensure clear and coherent writing.
