Our Writer’s CommentÂ
Start with a clear background section. Describe the group of children you’re observing—their age, cultural backgrounds, and any relevant dynamics in the group. This helps set the context for why you chose a specific issue to focus on.
Next, in your rationale, explain why you selected the particular issue—whether it’s identity, diversity, justice, or activism. Link this decision directly to your observations. For instance, if you noticed the children asking questions about differences among people, focusing on diversity might be most relevant. Make sure to connect your rationale to developmental theories or research, showing that you understand the importance of addressing these issues at this age.
When you choose a picture book, ensure it’s directly related to the issue you want to address. Explain why this book is appropriate—consider the themes, the age-appropriateness, and how it will resonate with the children. For example, a book that celebrates different cultures might be perfect for a discussion on diversity.
In your learning activity plan, outline clear objectives. What do you want the children to learn or understand by the end of the activity? Describe the materials and resources you’ll need, ensuring they align with your goals. Also, think about the questions and prompts you’ll use to guide the discussion. These should be open-ended to encourage the children to think deeply about the issue.
