Our Writer’s Comment

This assignment is designed to assess students’ understanding of business practices.

To secure an A+ grade, adhere to these guidelines and make sure your work aligns with the grading criteria:

Step 1: Understanding the Role-Play

You’ll be working in a triad—counsellor, client, and observer. Since the client is from a different cultural background, this is where you can really demonstrate empathy, cultural awareness, and adaptability as a counsellor. Even if you’re playing the role of the client or observer, understanding the counsellor’s approach is essential because it’ll impact your reflections later.

Step 2: Reflection and Feedback

After the session, there will likely be a reflection or feedback component, and this is where a lot of the marks come in. Whether you’re the counsellor, client, or observer, you need to critically reflect on the session. What went well? What could have been improved?

Questions to Guide Your Reflection:

  • For the Counsellor: How did I handle the cultural differences? Did I make assumptions, or did I ask open-ended questions to understand better? Did I miss any cues from the client that might be related to their cultural background?
  • For the Client: How did it feel to be listened to? Did the counsellor respect your cultural identity and experiences? Did they ask good questions to get to the heart of the issue?
  • For the Observer: Was the counsellor culturally sensitive? Did they make any assumptions? How well did they use active listening and empathy?

Step 3: Written Reflection (1000 Words)

In the written reflection, you want to summarize the session, highlight the key moments, and critically analyze what happened. To score well, be specific and use examples from the session.

Structure for the Reflection:

  1. Introduction (100-150 words): Briefly explain the purpose of the role-play and your role in the session. Mention the key focus on cultural differences and why this is important in counselling.
  2. Summary of the Session (200-300 words): Describe the session—what issues were raised, how the counsellor responded, and any major moments. Highlight any challenges related to cultural differences.
  3. Critical Reflection (400-500 words): This is the most important part. Here, you want to dig into what worked and what didn’t. Focus on:
    • Cultural sensitivity: Did the counsellor handle the client’s cultural background well? Were there any missteps? How could it have been better?
    • Counselling skills: Reflect on how well the counsellor used skills like empathy, active listening, and questioning. Did they miss any key moments or cues?
    • Improvements: What could be improved next time? Maybe the counsellor could have asked more culturally relevant questions or offered more space for the client to talk.
  4. Conclusion (100-150 words): Wrap it up by summarizing what you’ve learned about the importance of cultural sensitivity in counselling and how this experience will inform your future practice.
